Loy Krathong Yee Peng 2017 Buddhist Monks Ceremony with Candles Video
Here is a video I finally got around to editing from last year's Loy Krathong festival here in Chiang Mai. It is a simple scene of young Monks praying with candles and lanterns surrounding them. Unfortunately there are lots of flashes from tourists, so that's one reason I won't mention the temple as I don't want it to get even busier next time. 😁
Film street photography in Chiang Mai
Recently I bought a Canon rangefinder Canonet QL17. It wasn't quite for me so I changed to an Olympus XA2 film camera, which is a smaller plastic camera. It is pocketable and very simple to use. Below are crude photos of prints from my first roll of film; Kodak Pro 100, next I am trying Fujifilm.
In future I will be doing much more film photography in Chiang Mai because it is fun, I love the results and it makes me slow down. It is highly recommended for any one into photography and the Olympus XA2 is a perfect camera to start with as it is so easy to use, good quality and can be found very cheap on eBay. I think mine was £30 plus postage.
These photos were taken at the park in the old city of Chiang Mai, Sunday night market in the center of the old city and Thaepae Gate. The reason there is no sky is partly because they were shot on film, but also helped along by the Chiang Mai smokey season which affects the air at the moment with thick smog.
On my digital cameras I am now going through a black and white phase as I believe that will make me a better photographer. This is because you are forced to focus more on light and composition, rather than colours and characters which is my current way.

I just purchased this old film camera to try using film like the old street photography masters used to use. Some people say you need a rangefinder for street photography, we shall see... This camera has been referred to as the "poor man's Leica". After seeing prices in MBK mall in Bangkok last week for a third of a million Baht, I think the "normal man's Leica" is more appropriate. 😉

Loy Krathong 2017 Yee Peng Lantern Festival Chiang Mai
I finally got around to editing a video taken this year at the Loy Kratong Yee Peng celebrations. My wife and I let off our own lantern wishing for good things ahead, as is the tradition.
We found a spot in the heart of the action for this video, which shows a non stop stream of lanterns being launched into the night sky. We were Along the Ping River next to a bridge. The sound isn't ideal (birds don't make noise like this at night), but it is 5:1 surround sound and relaxing, or you can mute it.
This is a very simple video, just something to gaze at when you need something to help you sleep at night. I guess counting the lanterns might be like the old remedy of counting sheep. I will get around to adding some photos from 2017's Yee Peng in Chiang Mai when I can.

It is available as a Windows screensaver or loopable MP4 video from Uscenes. Makes a nice relaxing scene. Hopefully there will be more of Chiang Mai's cat cafes added in future.
Side note: I am currently in Vietnam (Hoi An) and have discovered various reports of cat and dog theft in Hoi An. This is due to the dog and cat industry in Vietnam. A report was publish mid August 2020 after an investigation by Four Paws, an international animal welfare organization. You can read the report at https://dogcatmeat.four-paws.org/the-truth/a-report-on-the-cat-meat-trade-in-vietnam . When we get back to Chiang Mai it is certainly something I will be looking into there too.

| This spot outside McDonalds looking towards Tha Pae Gate is a great for spotting passing local characters. Cross the road and walk towards the gate to find many people having their photo taken at this Chiang Mai landmark. You may also feed the hundreds of pigeons. |

Mae Sa Waterfalls in Mae Rim just north of Chiang Mai
This video is of one of the 10 or so waterfalls at the site called Mae Sa in Mae Rim. Mae Sa falls are about 30 minutes away from Chiang Mai. It is an easy route which you can go via a scooter or Songthaew. There are various other attractions in Mae Rim, so best to make a day of it with the 2 ends of the spectrum being a butterfly garden and a shooting range.
Mae Sa waterfalls are not the best falls in the world but there are plenty of them. Go early to avoid the heat and there will also be less tourists earlier. It is a decent walk in the heat to reach the last one. You can hire a picnic mat and buy cooked food when you arrive. Don't forget drinking water and your swimwear to cool off in one of the pools of water.
